Travelers to Receive Updated Email about International Trips

Effective March 24, 2016, information about the University of Maryland's comprehensive international health insurance, including medical and security evacuation, administered by Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), will be included in the trip preparation email for travelers to international destinations (excluding travelers on Education Abroad trips).

In order for an international traveler to receive CISI insurance coverage, the traveler's Travel Approval Request must be approved by 6:30 p.m. three days before the trip departure date.

The added paragraph reads:

Travelers receiving this email will automatically be enrolled in the University of Maryland's comprehensive international health insurance, including medical and security evacuation, administered by Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). There will be no charge to the traveler or the traveler's department for this insurance coverage. Before your trip, please review the coverage summary and information about how to use CISI services on the CISI website. Based on the information provided on the Travel Approval Request for this trip, CISI will email you a customized CISI Identification Card approximately two days prior to your departure date.

A copy of the entire email is included below for your reference. International travelers will receive this email soon after their Travel Approval Request (or a trip adjustment) is approved.

As a reminder, a Travel Approval Request is required for all University of Maryland employee, sponsored, and group international travel. All participants/travelers must be listed on the TAR, and each traveler's own email address must be provided on the TAR. For additional information, see the University of Maryland Travelers' Guide.

Please share this information with all staff supporting the international travel planning and approval process.

Should you have any questions, please call Travel Services at 301.405.0607 or send an email to travel@mercury.umd.edu.

The University of Maryland strongly encourages international travelers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service of the U.S. Department of State that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Enrollment in STEP allows travelers to receive information about safety conditions in their destination country and facilitates contact from the U.S. Embassy and family/friends in an emergency.

It is the traveler's personal responsibility to ensure that travel documents are current and to comply with U.S. and destination country requirements at the time of travel. Requirements for non-U.S. citizens may differ; therefore, travelers must determine the travel document requirements that are applicable to their situation.

In addition, U.S. export control laws restrict carrying certain research equipment and certain proprietary technical information (for example, on hard drives) to specified foreign locations. U.S. export laws also restrict travel to sanctioned countries. Before visiting a sanctioned country or carrying research equipment or proprietary technical information to any foreign location, it is important to understand whether any export restrictions apply. Visit the Export Compliance Office website, email export@umd.edu, or call 301.405.4212 for more information.
